Wheelbarrow
A wheelbarrow is a cart with a tray bolted to two handles and two legs. Although best known as an appliance for the amateur gardener to move light loads, a wheelbarrow is frequently used in industry and construction to move heavy loads. The development of the modern wheelbarrow was in China, at least as early as 100 B.C. One of the earliest versions was a single large wheel at or near the front of a platform. The load was behind the wheel, and the handler lifted the heavy end and pushed the load. In some cases, a small basket was used to carry the load; if it was a heavy load, a second person would pull ahead.
Another version, perhaps developed by Chuko Liang in 300 AD, used a surface to carry on: the raised surface of a large wheel housing that covered the top half of the wheel. A platform at the axle level stretched out to the sides could then carry heavy loads, individuals, and goods in a pannier style while being steered by the handler. Loads were raised higher from the ground than modern wheelbarrow loads. Chinese wheelbarrows were thus comparable to rickshaws in that the objective was to transport heavy loads over distances.
